How to Make Your Mark in the Empire State

What Should I Know About NYC RFPs?

With a GDP of nearly $2 trillion all on its own, bidding in New York City is a uniquely valuable path to grow your business. Financial services dominate, but healthcare, technology, and educational services represent billions in revenue opportunities as well.

New York City’s dense and diverse population make it a rewarding and unique place to do business. Like most RFPs nationwide, New York City proposals reflect the population they serve, which is why you might notice an emphasis on granting minority-owned, women-owned and LGBTQ+-owned businesses higher scores in their evaluation criteria. Around 800 different languages are spoken in the city, making it one of the most linguistically diverse in the world, so New York City RFPs may dedicate a group of questions to language services.

If your business doesn’t fit in the above categories, or has not considered these specific questions, never fear! Many times a New York City proposal will recognize a MWBE (Minority or Women-Owned Business Enterprise) subcontractor or co-proposer to fill this requirement. The Bid Lab’s experts can also help you determine whether or not your business qualifies for any of the aforementioned designations.

Finding New York RFPs and Bidding in New York

How Are New York City RFPs Different Than Other RFPs?

If you look for procurement listings on the nyc.gov website, you’ll find New York City proposal opportunities in all five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx. While each locality operates under the same general citywide laws and regulations, they exist separately in many ways. For example, the Brooklyn charter school system has its own network that’s separate from Manhattan charter schools.

To get even more specific, there are many interborough differences across entities. For example, the Coney Island hospital system, located in Brooklyn, functions as a separate system from the Brooklyn Heights hospital system. While this means that New York City proposals offer seemingly endless opportunities to respond to the many needs of businesses and entities, it does require the proposer to pay attention to minute details: Each borough, and even neighborhood, will have specific requirements depending on its location and population. Not to mention that once you venture farther, for example to respond to a Long Island RFP, the rules and conditions can change once again. Lucky for you, The Bid Lab was born in New York City and there’s no one who knows how to navigate the New York bidding waters better than we do.
