The Good Food Institute (GFI) is seeking a research firm with expertise in the field of environmental science. The partnering firm will analyze the implications of potential land use shifts due to increasing demands for alternative proteins. This study focuses on future North American land use scenarios for 2030 and 2050 based on several forecasts of market penetration of alternative proteins into different product categories.

GFI is an international nonprofit building a “sustainable, healthy and truly global food system”. Their global team of scientists, lawyers, lobbyists, business experts and analysts work with partners around the world to build a better food system. The goal? To combat an unsustainable and inefficient meat production system. GFI is developing the roadmap for progressive plant, fermentation-derived and cultivated protein alternatives.

For this project, GFI seeks a “clear understanding of future scenarios” for land use to scale up alternative protein production. Therefore, the selected partnering firm must analyze and respond to:

  1. Firstly, how will a shift toward alternative proteins affect land use within North American agriculture from now through 2050?
  2. Secondly, what opportunities would this change in land use open up for alternate uses like ecosystem restoration, carbon sequestration and clean energy production?
  3. Thirdly, how and why is the productivity of agricultural land expected to change (due to factors like climate change or degradation of soil quality)?

The results of this analysis will be utilized to validate claims related to the climate and biodiversity implications associated with protein production. In addition, all projects conducted through GFI are open-research. This means your firm will gain visibility and credibility in this critical and growing field of alternative proteins. As a result, your research will not only influence other scientists, but it will also be significant for policymakers, investors and stakeholders interested in impacting the planet.
