NFL’s Pain Management Committee RFP
The NFL’s Pain Management Committee (PMC) has issued an RFP seeking researchers to study pain management and athletic performance in elite football players. The PMC’s current focus is finding alternative solutions to prescription opiates for pain management. In this Funding Opportunity for Innovative Translational and Clinical Research, researchers are specifically asked to identify and research the use of cannabinoids as that supplement.
The Funding Opportunity intends to facilitate the study of:
- the effects of cannabinoids on pain in elite football players (post-surgical and/or in daily pain management);
- the effects of non-pharmacologic treatments on pain in elite football players (postsurgical and/or in daily pain management); and
- the effects of cannabis or cannabinoids on athletic performance (e.g., psychomotor, reaction time, cardiorespiratory function) in elite football players.
The PMC will provide funding of up to $1 million for up to five (5) pilot research proposals from leading investigative teams in the fields of pain management.

Important Dates
Each research investigator team should submit a pre-proposal by July 31st, 2021 at 6 PM EST. Pre-proposals should outline the team’s goals, qualifications, and current research progress within the guidelines above. Submissions should additionally include clinical endpoints with an anticipated timeline and expected milestones.

Following PMC’s recommendation, a Formal Proposal and Oral Presentation will be required from invited research teams. Teams can prepare to heighten their scores by visiting and reviewing the NIH Scoring Guidance and Procedure guidelines.
